Grey’s Anatomy alum Eric Dane is now receiving 24/7 nursing care as he navigates life with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The revelation comes from his estranged wife, Rebecca Gayheart, who recently opened up about the actor’s condition and the logistical hurdles their family has faced since his diagnosis.+1

Dane, 53, publicly announced in April that he is living with ALS, an incurable neurodegenerative disorder that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
While the diagnosis is life-altering, the actor has found a staunch advocate in Gayheart.
A “Locked In” Battle for Care
In a candid personal essay for The Cut, Gayheart revealed the behind-the-scenes struggles of managing Dane’s health, specifically the difficulty in securing insurance coverage for necessary full-time support.
“Eric has 24/7 nurses now,” Gayheart shared, detailing a fierce confrontation with insurance providers. She recalled a discouraging conversation where a representative told her, “You can keep applying, and I’ll keep denying.”
Refusing to back down, Gayheart took charge. “I made it my mission. I was ‘locked in,’ as the kids would say… And we got it approved after two appeals.”
Currently, Eric Dane’s care schedule is divided into 21 shifts per week. Gayheart notes that she personally steps in to cover any gaps in the nursing schedule, highlighting the family’s “all-hands-on-deck” approach.
A Complicated but Loving Partnership
Dane and Gayheart have had a widely publicized and complex relationship. Married in 2004, Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018. However, in a move to keep the family unit intact during Dane’s health crisis, she dismissed the divorce petition this past March.+1
Despite living apart for eight years and dating other people, Gayheart describes their current dynamic as rooted in deep, familial love rather than romance.
“It’s a very complicated relationship, one that’s confusing for people,” she explained. “Our love may not be romantic, but it’s a familial love.”
She believes this unique arrangement has provided a stable environment for their two daughters. “It’s nice for the kids to see maybe a softer side of us,” she said. “Hopefully, what they see instead are two adults who are trying to be mature and focus on what’s important.”
Eric Dane on His Acting Future
Best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, Eric Dane remains committed to his craft, even as his physical mobility declines. He recently returned to the screen in Brilliant Minds, playing a firefighter with ALS—a role that mirrors his real-life reality.
During a panel with the I AM ALS organization, Dane expressed gratitude for his ability to continue working, noting that while his body is limited, his mind and speech remain sharp.
“I’m fairly limited in what I can do physically as an actor, but I still have my brain… so I’m willing to just do about anything,” Dane stated. He acknowledged that future roles will likely need to accommodate his condition: “From here on out, it’s going to have to be ALS-centric… I’m grateful that I can still work in any capacity.”
